This Is How We Do It
Seven real children in seven countries, laid out side by side through one ordinary day — breakfast, school, play, dinner, bed.
Every classroom already holds more countries than the map on the wall admits. One child’s grandmother writes right to left. One family eats the big meal at midnight in December. One name has now been handed back, slightly broken, by four different teachers. The books on this page take that ordinary fact seriously, and they do it by being specific: a father’s fishing pond in Minneapolis and the other one he left in Vietnam, a Cree grandmother’s braid, the exact number of hours a pot of daal needs, the ba-dum ba-dum of the Seoul subway. Nobody in them is a representative of anything. They are people, at home, doing something in particular.
Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 1,484 multicultural books, our editors picked fifteen that do the two jobs teachers and parents actually come here for — a mirror for the child who has never seen their own kitchen in a book, and a window for the child who has only ever seen their own. The shortlist deliberately spreads across traditions and formats instead of stacking three titles from one culture. After that, use the age shelves below: board books of babies and first words from around the world, picture books you can finish in one sitting, and middle grade novels for readers ready for immigration, exile, and the harder history.
