Mike Thaler (1936–2024) was an American author and illustrator best known for the Black Lagoon series, which began as a 1989 picture book, The Teacher from the Black Lagoon, and later grew into the Black Lagoon Adventures chapter books. Jared Lee illustrated the series, and Thaler also wrote dozens of riddle books. He published more than 220 children's books, starting after he sold cartoons to New York magazines and editor Ursula Nordstrom asked him to write for children.
