You had real arguments between the parents that would blow up in front of the children, just like in real life. The children were forced to find coping mechanisms to handle the stress placed on them.
The story begins at school where Janna-Berta and the other students and teachers are alarmed of a nuclear accident in the vicinity. She returns home. Her younger brother Uli is alone because the parents are away and the grandparents on vacation.
Her hair falls out. She makes a friend, Ayse, who later dies from radiation poisoning. Her aunt from Hamburg finds her and tells her that her parents and youngest brother, who had been with them, are dead. The news was intended to be kept secret.
That being said, Hamish drew more of my attention during this read-through. His parents are away an awful lot which goes some way to explaining his acting out in the classroom and general disregard for authority. He is probably the brightest child in Class Three but needs a proper challenge.

She later confesses to her grandmother, who helps her get the correct package to each recipient and doesn’t tattle on her to Katie’s parents. The open stretch of this busy Scottish island is an ideal setting for industrious Katie Morag.
