The Food Group Books

The eight main picture books can be read in publication order, from The Bad Seed through The Humble Pie, but every character's story stands on its own. Children can also start with the food or social-emotional theme that interests them most.

The Great Eggscape, The Good, the Bad, and the Spooky, As Cool as It Gets, and Have Yourself a Cheesy Little Christmas are seasonal specials rather than numbered main books.

These are playful, low-stakes stories about recognizable behavior and feelings. Characters may be rude, boastful, resentful, anxious, isolated, or overly focused on approval, but the books avoid shaming them and emphasize that people can make different choices.

The messages are clear enough to open conversations about self-care, kindness, confidence, forgiveness, and humility without turning the stories into lectures. Pete Oswald's large expressions and visual jokes make them especially effective as read-alouds.
