Read the 14 novels in numbered order from Stormbreaker through Nightshade Revenge. The missions often stand alone, but recurring enemies, allies, losses, and Alex's changing relationship with MI6 make publication order important.
The graphic novels adapt the first seven prose adventures. They are an alternate format, not books #15–21, so readers can choose prose or graphic versions of those stories and then continue with the eighth prose novel.

These are fast thrillers with frequent gunfire, explosions, kidnapping, torture or threats of torture, murder attempts, deaths, and adults exploiting a teenager. Villains can be grotesque or frightening, and Alex experiences grief and trauma even when the pace moves quickly.
The action is cinematic rather than graphic, but the series is substantially more violent and morally complicated than a school adventure. Alex is capable and resourceful, while the books repeatedly question whether the adults and institutions directing him deserve his trust.
