Mines and Mining Books for Kids

The Best Mines and Mining Books for Kids

A mine begins with a question: what is under there, and how do you get it out? The answer may involve a pan in a cold river, a shaft under the ocean, a pony hauling coal, or enough timber, pumps, cables, lamps, and nerve to keep a tunnel open. Children's books are especially good at the scale of it. They can put a reader beside a forty-niner washing gravel, inside a Pennsylvania breaker, or above a modern rescue crew trying to reach people trapped where daylight cannot.

Bookroo's collection of mines and mining books includes picture-book visits to coal country, Gold Rush adventures, mine mysteries, true rescue accounts, and stories about families whose towns rose around what came out of the ground. Our ten favorites favor books with a mine at the center rather than a stray treasure cave in the last chapter. Start with the shortlist, then use the picture-book shelf for first histories and read-alouds or the independent-reader shelf for longer adventures, machinery, mining towns, and underground survival.
