Children’s Books About Tools

The Best Children’s Books About Tools

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

A hammer is the first machine most children understand. It is heavy at one end, it makes a satisfying noise, and it visibly changes the world—which is roughly everything a two-year-old wants from an object. The best tool books know this and lean into it: the tape measure that snaps back, the drill that whines, the screw that finally bites. They also carry a quieter promise underneath the sound effects, which is that things are made by somebody, and that somebody could eventually be you.

Our editors went through Bookroo’s tool shelf and pulled out the ones worth owning—sturdy board books organized around noise and naming, picture books where a real project gets finished instead of merely started, one nonfiction look at animals that use tools of their own, and a few stories where the tools themselves do the talking. Start with our 12 favorites below, then browse by age: board books for the toddler who has already claimed your tape measure, picture books for the child ready to hold a real screwdriver.
