Tornado Books for Kids

The Best Tornado Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Children who live where tornadoes happen already know the drill: the sky goes an odd shade of green, the siren winds up, and everyone files into an interior hallway with their arms over their heads. Children who live somewhere else are often just as interested, because a storm that can move a house is exactly the sort of fact a seven-year-old wants to carry around. A tornado book has to serve both readers at once, and the good ones manage it the same way — they explain the storm honestly, then stay in the room afterward, when the sky has cleared and somebody has to work out what happens next.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of tornado books, our editors chose twelve that handle the storm well: a tractor going back out for the animal nobody likes, a Nebraska night that became the tornado novel every fifth grader gets handed, straightforward science for the child who wants to know why the funnel spins, and middle-grade novels where the twister takes the roof off in chapter one and the real story is everything it uncovered. Start with the shortlist, then use the shelves below — picture books for the years when the siren is the scariest part, and chapter books for readers who want the whole storm and the whole aftermath.
