The Best Elf Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 31, 2026

Ask a child what an elf is and the answer depends entirely on the month. In December an elf is knee-high, wears green felt, works in a toy factory under a great deal of deadline pressure, and possibly sits on your bookshelf keeping notes. The rest of the year an elf is tall, unhurried, several hundred years old, better with a bow than you will ever be, and not especially interested in what humans want. Both are real, and neither is the original — the oldest elves in the nursery are the two small strangers who slipped into a shoemaker’s workshop at midnight, did the work, and vanished the moment anybody thanked them. That is still the whole idea: someone helpful, slightly uncanny, and just out of sight.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 92 elf books, our editors chose twelve that hold up in every direction a child might come at the subject — the Grimm tale in Jim LaMarche’s lamplit paintings, the Mirkwood and Rivendell chapters that taught modern fantasy what an elf is, the eleven-book series a nine-year-old will vanish into, a goblin who has had it up to here with elf work ethic, and a Newbery Honor novel about an elf village in a weedy backyard that may or may not be there at all. A note on how we chose: an elf has to actually turn up. A great many Christmas books are shelved here because a workshop scene flickers past in the background, and those did not make the list. Start with the twelve, then browse by age below — the shelves run from lift-the-flap board books, through the first chapter book a six-year-old finishes alone, up to fantasy series long enough to occupy a fifth grader all winter.
