The Best Dance Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 31, 2026

Children dance long before anyone teaches them how — bouncing in a car seat, spinning in the kitchen until the room tilts, stomping a puddle in perfect time with nothing at all. Somewhere around four, that cheerfully unembarrassed motion meets a mirrored room, a barre, and a teacher counting to eight, and a new question arrives with it: can I actually do this? The best dance books live on both sides of that door. Some are pure invitation — clap here, twirl now, do-si-do. Others follow a real dancer through the unglamorous years of class it took before anybody called her a star.

Bookroo's collection of 611 dance books runs from barnyard hoedowns to Anna Pavlova, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, and Amalia Hernández, with tap, folklórico, hip-hop, jingle dresses, and a great many tutus in between. Our editors chose twelve favorites below — the place to start if you are shopping for a first ballet class or for a child who has just discovered they can move — then browse sturdy dance-along board books, picture books about class and stage, or longer novels for readers who want a whole season of rehearsal.
