The Best Villain Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 31, 2026

Ask a child what they remember about a book and you will hear about the villain far more often than the hero: the headmistress who throws children by their pigtails, the relative with one eyebrow and an eye tattooed on his ankle, the mother who has buttons where her eyes should be. A good bad guy is the engine of the story — they want something specific, they arrive early, and they are the reason a child who never finishes anything suddenly has to know what happens on page 140. They are also how children practice being frightened on purpose: at a size they choose, in a chair they are sitting in, with the book closable at any moment.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 260 villain books, our editors picked twelve that actually earn their bad guys — a wolf with a very convincing alibi, four animal crooks who decide to try being heroes, the graphic novels that turn a reluctant seven-year-old into a reader, and the handful of genuine nightmares, flagged clearly so nobody meets a button-eyed mother at bedtime unwarned. Every entry below says who the book suits and how dark it really gets. Then work down the age shelves for picture-book read-alouds and chapter books for ages 6–11.
