The Best Books About Scientists for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 1, 2026

A scientist is mostly a person who refused to stop asking. A farm boy in Vermont wanted to know what a snowflake looked like up close, so he pointed a camera through a microscope and spent fifty winters at it. A young woman in London liked lizards enough to bring a Komodo dragon to tea. A teenager in Malawi read a library book about windmills and built one out of bicycle parts. The lab coat and the Nobel medal come much later, if they come at all — the part a child can recognize starts with noticing something and wanting an answer badly enough to go get it.

Bookroo’s collection of 263 books about scientists runs from board-book galleries of famous names to picture-book biographies, novels with a scientist at the center, and longer nonfiction for readers who want a whole career. Our twelve favorites cover the fields children actually ask about — dinosaurs, sharks, chimpanzees, reptiles, the ocean, light, and the stars — and lean toward books that show the work rather than only the reward. Start with the shortlist, then browse board books for babies and toddlers, picture books for ages three to eight, and chapter books and biographies for readers six and up.
