The Best Paleontology Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 1, 2026

Paleontology asks children to do something they are already alarmingly good at: look at one broken piece of a thing and describe the whole animal. A jawbone, a footprint, a patch of skin impression—and from that a paleontologist has to work out how big it was, what it ate, how fast it moved, and whether it had feathers. Then somebody digs up a better specimen and the answer changes. The best paleontology books keep that part in, because the bone is the evidence and the animal on the page is an argument.

Bookroo's collection of 184 paleontology books runs from board-book digs to graphic-novel tours of eras most adults have never heard of, and our editors picked twelve that keep the reasoning visible. You will meet the people who do the work—Mary Anning on the Dorset cliffs, Sue Hendrickson in the South Dakota badlands, Wendy Sloboda in an Alberta hillside—alongside the books that explain how a skeleton is read, why birds count as dinosaurs, and what a mile of canyon rock is actually recording. Start with the shortlist, then use the board shelf for the youngest diggers, the picture shelf for read-alouds and first explainers, or the chapter shelf for field guides, era-by-era tours, and the questions paleontologists have not settled yet.
