The Best Fire Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 8, 2026

Fire is the first genuinely dangerous thing most children are allowed to stand near. They get to blow out birthday candles, poke a campfire with a stick, and watch a match do its one trick, and the whole time some part of them is quietly working out how something so pretty is also the reason the smoke alarm goes off when Dad makes toast. Then the questions start, usually at bedtime and usually all at once: how hot is it, could our house catch fire, what would we take, and what exactly happens when you dial 911. Books are a much better place to answer that than the eleven o'clock news.

Bookroo's collection of 96 fire books runs from a dragon who sneezes at the tea table to a Newbery Honor history of the night Chicago burned. The thirteen below are our favorites, chosen to cover the whole subject: the safety lesson, the firehouse, the wildfire, the famous fire, and the quieter story of a family putting a life back together afterward. Below the shortlist, the picture book and chapter book shelves hold everything else worth a look — and if you have a two-year-old who mostly wants sirens and ladders, our fire truck books are the better shelf to start on.
