Montana Books for Kids

The Best Montana Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 8, 2026

Montana is the fourth-largest state and the third-emptiest, which is a polite way of saying there is a great deal of it and almost nobody in it. Children's books know what to do with that. A homestead claim is three hundred and twenty acres of wind. A grizzly is a neighbor with opinions. The Rocky Mountain Front comes up out of the wheat like a wall somebody built overnight, and the sky the license plates brag about really is the first thing a visitor notices and the last thing they stop talking about.

Bookroo's collection of Montana books is smaller than the state deserves, and it leans in two directions: the parks a family actually drives to, and the century when people tried to farm this. Our editors picked thirteen favorites below—Stagecoach Mary's mail route out of Cascade, the 1967 night that changed how Glacier handles bears, a tall tale that rearranges the Rockies, the wolves that came back to the Yellowstone country, and a Newbery Honor homesteader who is very bad at quitting. After the shortlist, browse by age: picture books about the parks and the state alphabet for ages three to eight, then chapter books, ranch mysteries, and survival novels for independent readers. The catalog holds exactly one Montana board book, so it leads the shortlist instead of propping up a shelf of its own.
