The Best Storytelling Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Ask a five-year-old what happened at school and you get four words. Ask her to tell you a story and you get eleven minutes, a villain who is somehow also the family dog, and an ending that arrives three separate times. Children are fluent storytellers long before they can write a sentence: they narrate their own play out loud, they retell the same family anecdote until it hardens into legend, and they will stop a grown-up cold for telling a bedtime story wrong. What they are practicing is the oldest thing on the shelf — the thing people did at kitchen tables, around fires, and in library story hours long before anyone thought to write it down.

Our editors went through Bookroo’s collection of 255 storytelling books looking for the ones where the telling is the actual subject — the grandparent with something to hand down, the storyteller working a public square, the child who talks her way out of trouble one tale at a time — and set aside the many books that merely happen to be stories. Start with the fixed shortlist of 13 favorites below, then browse by age: read-alouds for children still working out what a story needs, and chapter books for readers old enough to ask who is doing the telling, and why.
