Who are the "Unassigned students" on our school dashboard?
Fix a problem · Updated
Issue: The school dashboard shows an Unassigned students section listing students who aren't in any class.
Applies to: Schools whose students sign in with their school Google accounts. Only school admins see this section, and only when it has someone in it.
Why it happens
When a student signs in with Google using your school's student email, Bookroo looks for a student with exactly the same name on a class roster at your school. If it finds one, the account is linked to that student. If it doesn't, for example because the roster says "Sam Lee" and Google says "Samuel Lee", the student lands in Unassigned.
Fix
Place each student from the Unassigned students section:
- Same student: when Bookroo spots a likely match in one of your classes, it shows it next to the student. Click Same student to confirm.
- Already in a class means the class roster already uses this Google account. Confirming just removes the extra Unassigned entry.
- Looks like means a student with a matching name. Confirming merges the two, so their reading history, quizzes and points end up in the class. A merge can't be undone.
- … → Same student as…: pick the class, then the student, when there's no suggestion or it's the wrong one.
- … → Move to a class: for a new student who isn't on any roster yet. They keep their points and reading history.
- … → Not a student here: removes them from the list. If they sign in with a school Google account again, they'll come back.

Prevent it
- Before students first sign in with Google, make each roster name match the student's Google account name exactly. Change a name with Roster → … → Edit name.
- Or have students sign in with the class code, QR card or Clever instead (How students sign in).
