The Best Russia Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 8, 2026

Russia arrives in children's books the way it arrives in winter: all at once, and bigger than expected. A hut on chicken legs goes stalking through the birches. A firebird drops one glowing feather and ruins a man's peace of mind. A wooden doll opens and there is a smaller doll inside, and inside that one, another. Then there is the real country underneath the stories—the taiga and the steppe, the Trans-Siberian rolling east for a week, an emperor's family and a hundred years of upheaval, and a city built on a swamp because a tsar said so. Few subjects hand a child so much scenery.

Bookroo's collection of 82 Russia books covers all of it: nesting doll board books for the smallest hands, Caldecott-winning folktales, picture book biographies of Kandinsky and Anna Pavlova, and middle grade novels about wolf wilders, Young Pioneers, and boys drawing under the kitchen table in Leningrad. Our editors picked twelve favorites below. After the shortlist, browse by age—first Russia books for babies and toddlers, folktales and biographies for ages three to eight, then history, adventure, and novels for independent readers.
