The Best Books About Imaginary Places for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

Children want to know where it is. Not what it means — where. How long the road is, which side of the river the castle sits on, whether the winter goes all the way down to the sea. The great invented countries answer that, and they answer it before the plot has any use for the information: Tolkien had drawn and renamed half a continent before a hobbit ever left home, and Baum gave Oz four color-coded lands and a working set of borders. The crossing itself is almost always casual — a door in a spare room, a hidden platform, a model castle on a shelf. What waits on the other side has weather, laws, and a history that was running long before anybody arrived.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 266 books set in imaginary places, our editors picked the countries worth the trip: the ones with a map in the endpapers and enough furniture to live in. Start with our shortlist of 15 favorites, then browse by age — board-book introductions to Oz and Neverland, picture books where the setting is the whole story, and chapter books for readers ready to cross over and stay a while. If what you actually want is the worlds children build for themselves — backyard kingdoms, imaginary friends, cardboard countries — our imagination page is the better door.
