The Best Children’s Books About Tantrums

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

A tantrum is not a negotiation, and by the time it arrives there is nothing left to negotiate with. Something small goes sideways — the wrong cup, the wrong sock, a cracker that broke in half — and a body that has been holding itself together since breakfast simply stops. Nobody is being manipulated; a very new nervous system has hit its limit in public. Books do almost nothing during the storm, which is fine, because their real work happens afterward: on the calm side of it, a story can hand a child words for what just happened and hand everyone in the house the same words to use next time.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 59 books about tantrums, our editors chose ten that get the physics right — the slow build down the shopping aisle, the roar with a beginning and an end, the calm-down routine practiced on a good day so it is there on a bad one, and the bedtime that forgives an entire terrible afternoon. Start with the shortlist, then use the age shelves below: board books for the toddler years, when the meltdowns are loudest and the vocabulary is thinnest, and picture books for the ages when a child can start feeling the storm coming.
