The Best Earthquake Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 1, 2026

An earthquake is the one disaster with no warning and no weather report. The floor moves, the dishes walk off the shelf, and then it stops—and the first question every child asks is why. The answer is unusually satisfying: the outside of the planet is broken into pieces that grind past each other, and every few decades one of them slips. Good earthquake books for children do two things at once. They make that mechanism clear enough to draw on a napkin, and they follow real people through the minutes and days afterward, when the story stops being about geology and starts being about who got out, who went back in, and what got rebuilt.

Bookroo's collection of 51 earthquake books covers both halves. Our editors picked twelve favorites below, spanning the 1906 San Francisco quake and the fires that finished the job, the magnitude 9.2 that hit Alaska on Good Friday 1964, the 2010 Port-au-Prince earthquake, the 2011 quake off Japan and the wave behind it, and a modern novel set on the fault line that runs under the Pacific Northwest. After the shortlist, browse by age: picture books that explain faults and safety for ages three to eight, then chapter books and middle grade for readers ready to follow a disaster from the first tremor through the aftershocks.
