Help Center · Reading & points

A student recorded reading but got fewer points (or none). Why?

Fix a problem · Updated

Issue: A student's reading shows in their log, but the points are lower than expected or zero.

Fix: find the cause

What you see Cause Fix
The student is near 1,000 points this week Weekly cap. Points stop at 1,000 a week. Reading past the cap still shows in the log, but its points aren't added later. Nothing to fix. The cap resets early Monday morning.
The book says "To earn points for this book, pass the quiz, or have your teacher certify this reading." The student is set to Quiz or admin certified, so points wait for proof. The student passes the book's quiz, or you certify it: Reading Log → … → Admin certify.
The book says it's above the student's ZPD Books above a student's ZPD need a passed quiz or your certification, whatever their restriction setting. Same as above.
The book says the student will earn zero or a percentage of the normal points The book is below their ZPD. It earns the percentage set in Reading Levels & ZPD → Points for books below the ZPD, which starts at 0%. Raise that percentage, or Admin certify the book to give full points.
The student can't mark the book read and sees "This book can't be reread for N days" Reread Wait Days. The same book can't be finished again until the wait passes. Wait, or lower it in Settings → Reading Restrictions.
"Ask a teacher to help record your reading" The student is set to Admin controlled. Record it for them from Add Reading (Record or fix reading).
A short entry on a picture book Pages only count on books of 48+ pages, so a few minutes on a picture book earns little until it's finished. Mark the book finished for the 100-point book bonus.

Certifying, or a passed quiz, adds the held points right away.

Why it happens

Points follow the rules in How points work, plus any restrictions you set (Require a quiz before points) and the student's ZPD (Reading levels and ZPD). A student in more than one class gets the strictest restriction of those classes.

Changed a restriction? It can take up to 15 minutes to reach a signed-in student. Have them refresh.
