The Best Adventure Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated August 1, 2026

Adventure starts smaller than you would think. It is a toddler deciding the long wavy grass is crossable, a boy with a purple crayon drawing himself a moonlit path, a girl chalking a door onto her bedroom wall. The crash landings, mutinies, and dragons come later, but the shape never changes: someone leaves the safe place, handles what happens out there, and comes back different.

Bookroo’s collection of 3,260 adventure books runs from board-book expeditions to castaway survival and full-length quests, so our editors screened it for stories that actually deliver that leaving-and-returning shape rather than simply printing the word on the cover. Start with our 15 favorites — the first six work as read-alouds before a child can read at all, the last five are the classics a ten-year-old should not miss — then browse by age for board books, picture books, and chapter books about voyages, treasure, pirates, wild places, and getting home again.
