The Best Castle Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 25, 2026

A castle is the rare building a child can read like a diagram. Almost nothing about it is decoration. The ditch is there to stop anyone tunneling under the wall, the arrow slit is a hand’s width on the outside and a room’s width on the inside, the gate passage has holes in the ceiling for exactly the reason you suspect, and the pleasant little chamber jutting out over the moat is the toilet. Then comes the second surprise, which is how crowded and cold and loud the place actually was — hundreds of people, animals in the yard, one fire worth standing near. Children want both castles, the working fortress and the silhouette on the hill with a flag on top, and the good books hand over the same thing either way: permission to go inside and look around.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 147 castle books, our editors chose twelve that let a reader in — a Caldecott Honor cross-section of a fortress going up stone by stone, a beginning reader that runs those same walls through a siege, a castle that grows a new room every Tuesday, a walking castle whose front door opens onto four different places, and a Newbery Medal winner that spends as much time in the dungeon as in the banquet hall. This page is about the building. For the people in the armor, follow the knights link below; for the century the real ones went up in, follow medieval times. Then browse by age, from picture books for the drawbridge-and-dragon years to novels long enough to get properly lost in.
