The Best Dragon Books for Kids

By the Bookroo Editors
Updated July 27, 2026

Dragons have never agreed on what a dragon is. In one story the creature is a winged furnace sleeping on stolen gold; in another it is a long, cloud-borne bringer of rain. It may need slaying, rescuing, training, feeding, or a firm reminder not to eat the spicy salsa. That disagreement is the pleasure of the shelf. Children recognize the silhouette immediately, then discover that every culture and every author has redrawn the rules.

Drawing from Bookroo’s collection of 753 dragon books, our editors chose ten that make the creature essential rather than decorative: a Caldecott-winning battle from English legend, a princess who outthinks her captor, a child who inherits both Eastern and Western dragon traditions, tiny dragons tended for their tea, and whole dragon societies with their own wars and prophecies. Start with the fixed shortlist, then browse by age from sturdy first encounters and picture-book read-alouds to early chapter books, graphic novels, and middle-grade fantasy.
