“It’s Grandma’s birthday, and Ruby knows exactly what Grandma would love-a beautiful ballerina box. Max also knows what she’d love-a scary pair of ooey-gooey vampire teeth.”
“There. She has shopped.That went well. Now she just has to go back the same way. The bag is rather big to carry. It is also rather heavy. A big, heavy bag -now everyone call really see that she has been shopping. What an incredibly heavy bag! And so big! Why did she have to buy such a heavy bag? Silly Grandma.”
“Molly holds Grandma’s coin purse in her hand. Everyone will be able to tell she’s going shopping. Not everyone is smart enough to go shopping. There are a lot of ladies in the store. Once in a while a new lady comes in, and some of the old ladies leave. No one sees Molly. ”
“But Molly gets caught in her lie when Grandma goes to the store to sort out the mystery. After a stiff warning that she should tell the truth, Molly is given another chance. Poor Molly! She drops Grandma’s coin purse on the way to the store...”
“Grandma is surprised when she sees the bag. ‘Sweetheart, what is this?’ ‘Potatoes? No wonder it was heavy. But sweetie, you were supposed to buy beans. A bag of beans. ‘Beans! That’s what I said. I said I wanted beans, but she gave me potatoes anyway.’ ‘She gave you potatoes even though you asked for beans? What kind of person is she!”
‘I am going to go and give her a piece of my mind!’ Now Grandma goes back to the store with the bag of potatoes. She is very angry at the clerk. Grandma soon returns. She is no longer angry at the clerk. ‘You said you wanted potatoes. Why did you lie to me?’ Molly can’t answer that.
‘Did you forget what you were supposed to buy?’ ‘Sort of.’ ‘That can happen to anyone. But you must not lie anymore,’ says Grandma. No, Molly will never do that again.
Grandma asks Molly if she would like to go and get them each a Danish pastry for tea. Yes, she can do that. Now she is on top of things and strong again, and pastries are easy to carry.”
“The bakery is not far. Pastry, pastry, pastry, you can’t forget pastry!
When Molly gets there, she hasn’t forgotten the pastry. But now there’s something else. The coin purse. It’s gone! Molly runs back to Grandma as fast as possible. How could this happen? She cries very quietly.”
“Then she cries loudly and a lot. Grandma thinks she’s probably just dropped the coin purse on the sidewalk. Didn’t she see it on the way back? ‘No,’ screams Molly. ‘It’s been stolen!’ Grandma goes out with her to look for it. When they have gotten halfway to the bakery, Molly finds it. How lucky! Grandma goes home and Molly walks the rest of the way by herself. ”
“My grandma came and was disgusted with the state of the house. I showed her my room which is always neat and tidy and she gave me fifty pence. I showed her all the empty drink bottles in the dustbin and she was disgusted.”
